BENGALURU: In a big relief to former Karnataka chief minister and BJP strongman BS Yeddyurappa, a CBI court in Bengaluru on Wednesday acquitted him and others, including some of his family members, of all charges in relation to the Prerana Trust case+ .
The CBI had registered FIR against them four years ago after the Supreme Court in May 2012 directed it to probe charges of undue favours to firms involved in illegal mining in lieu of donations to Prerana Educational and Social Trust.
The trust is run by Yeddyurappa's two sons and other relatives.
The CBI had contended that Rs 20 crore was transferred by Jindal Steel Works (JSW) to the Trust. The controversy also includes the purchase of 1 acre 12 guntas land in Rachenahali between March-April 2006 by sons and son in law of Yeddyurappa, when he(Yeddyurappa) was deputy chief minister. The land was part of the acquisition by BDA for Arkavathy lay out.
On November 3, 2008, when Yeddyurappa became chief minister, the same land was denotified and then sold for a big sum to one of the companies.
In addition, acquisition of excess land at Shivamogga by the said trust was also part of the controversy.
CBI special court judge R B Dharmagoudar acquitted all the accused including Yeddyurappa's two sons BY Raghavendra and BY Vijayendra, and also RN Sohan Kumar, son-in-law of the former chief minister.
"Justice is done, I stand vindicated... Thanks to all well wishers,friends & supporters who stood with me in my tough times," Yeddyurappa said on Twitter.
