Oil, gas and mining - WWF-UK

Our goal is that, by 2050, the world’s combined ‘global footprint’ – the total amount of natural resources we’re using – will be at a level the planet can sustain.  That’s not the case right now.

Although oil and gas will carry on playing a role in the transition to a renewable energy future, it’s now recognised that 80% of the world’s remaining fossil fuel reserves will have to stay in the ground to minimise climate effects. And we need to start with the worst carbon polluter, coal.

We realise minerals will still need to be mined, even in a fully renewable energy age. But we urge that it’s done in an environmentally and socially responsible way, causing the least possible damage.
