North Korean hackers 'are mining Bitcoin rival' to raise funds for regime amid biting sanctions - Telegraph.co.uk

North Korean hackers appear to have found a way to mine a rival crypto-currency to Bitcoin, potentially allowing the regime to cash in on booming virtual cash and avoid swinging sanctions that are crippling its economy, according to a cyber-security company.

Cyber-security firm AlienVault has identified malignant code that can be concealed in software on a host computer and is being used to mine the virtual currency Moreno before sending it to a North Korean university.

The application was released on December 24 and takes advantage of unsuspecting host computers anywhere in the world to obtain Monero.

California-based AlienVault has been able to track the virtual funds and determined that they are being transferred to a server at Kim Il-Sung University, where Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, was a student for five years from 2002.
