MANILA - DMCI Mining Corp., the mining unit of DMCI Holdings, said Thursday its workforce was cut by 62 percent in the first nine months of the year due to the suspension of its mining operations in Palawan and Zambales.
The company told the stock exchange its manpower was reduced to 207 from 550 following the suspension of its subsidiary Berong Nickel Corporation in June due to alleged environmental violations.
Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation was also served a suspension order in July due to "social issues."
“Our hands are tied. We have no choice but to let go of most of our workers,” DMCI Mining president Cesar Simbulan Jr. said in a statement.
“We are trying to retain as many people as possible by assigning them to our environmental rehabilitation sites. But mine rehabilitation is not as labor intensive as nickel production so we simply cannot absorb all of them,” he added.
About 20 mining firms faced suspensions after failing the environment department’s industry-wide audit of compliance with safety standards.
DMCI Mining said it has submitted additional documentation to the environment department to support its appeal to lift the suspensions.
DMCI Holdings shares were up 0.31 percent to P12.96 on Thursday.
