The marriage -with crores of rupees spent on designer sets and bespoke jewellery -drew the attention of all, including income tax sleuths. Home minister G Parameshwara and BJP state chief BS Yeddyurappa were among the VIPs who blessed the couple.
Ironically, ministers DK Shivakumar, HK Patil and Ramalinga Reddy were at the glitzy pandal at Bangalore Palace when Congress member Anand Sharma, speaking in the Rajya Sabha on demonetization, highlighted the woes faced by the ordinary people. Chief minister Siddaramaiah stayed away as he had fought a highstakes political battle against the Reddy brothers. Parameshwara said he attended the wedding as an invitee and not as a minister, and added he has no business connection with Reddy . "When you are extended an invitation to a wedding, you honour it.This is what I have done," he said. His party colleague Ramalinga Reddy echoed him: "No politics here. Being in public life, Reddy could have minimized the wedding expenditure."
Sources said the CM felt uncomfortable attending the marriage since he had taken out a `padayatra' against Reddy's alleged illegal mining activities. "It isn't correct to attend a gala wedding when people are angry over black money ," a source close to the CM said.
Defying a reported diktat from the central leadership, BJP members turned out in impressive numbers.Yeddyurappa attended the sangeet on Tuesday and wedding on Wednesday . He was accompanied by former ministers Laxman Savadi and Murugesh Nirani.Former deputy chief minister R Ashoka, MPs Shobha Karandlaje and GM Siddeshwara, and legislator CT Ravi were the other prominent BJP leaders present at the function.
Governor Vaju Vala, actors Puneet Rajkumar and Yash also attended the marriage.
Janardhana Reddy's aide and BJP MP B Sriramulu was ushering in the guests. Each guest was handed tulsi and sandalwood saplings.
