Swiss chemicals group Clariant says it has bought two mining-focussed businesses in Australia and the US, and established a new regional research hub in Arizona, to enlarge its mining market footprint.

The company, through its Clariant Mining Solutions (CMS) arm, has agreed to buy Chemical & Mining Services Pty Ltd, a provider of specialty chemicals and technical services to mining industry clients mainly in Australia, and also the mineral processing reagent business of US-based SNF Flomin, for undisclosed sums.

CMS has also inaugurated the Mining Application and Development Centre in Tucson, Arizona, and expanded a facility in Reserve, Louisiana, so it can blend chemicals for the mining industry.

“These investments strengthen our global position as a leading supplier of specialty chemicals to the mining market,” said CMS global head, John Gordon.

“Chemical & Mining Services’ current business and products are a complementary strategic fit to our own and also provide us with specialised technical expertise. SNF Flomin, while US-based, supplied to customers worldwide and thus allows us to expand geographically and serve our customers with an increased product and service portfolio.

“The investments in North America enable us to become a stronger player in this region’s mining market and better support our customers by stepping up both our research and supply chain capabilities.”
